Trace amounts of radioactive Iodine-131 have been detected in the ground-level atmosphere in Luxembourg since beginning of 2017, but the source has not been found.

Responding to a parliamentary question, health minister Lydia Mutsch said that a Luxembourg station had sporadically detected traces of Iodine-131 since the start of 2017. She said: “The quantities measured were extremely low, close to the threshold for detection.”

Iodine-131 is a radioisotope of iodine, which is present in nuclear fission products and in high doses can cause mutation and death in cells that it penetrates.

Increased radiation at trace levels were detected across Europe in January 2017. ………

The levels were thought to have been linked to a radioactive leak at a nuclear reactor in Norway in October 2016…….

The leak was caused by a technical failure during treatment of the fuel in the reactor hall. It was contained and, according to the Norwegian authorities, no radioactive contamination was detected outside the facility, the minister said.

She added that the amount of reactive iodine leaked was equivalent to 10% of the permitted limit. Meanwhile, the source of the traces of radioactive Iodine-131 remains unknown.

William Ernest Henley’s “Invictus” a poem about resistance but about resilience

Posted in 2017, spirituality on April 30, 2017 by theboldcorsicanflame

reilience

The poem below from William Ernest Henley’s “Invictus”  is not a poem about resistance but about resilience. Resilience is an attitude of indifference displayed (a kind of passive resistance) that allows any man not to allow himself to be reached and destabilized by what makes him suffer. Nelson MANDELA was able to endure many years of imprisonment without being too psychologically affected by what he was subjected to.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of fate
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The forest fires broke out near the town of Namie, some seven kilometers from the disabled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, on Saturday evening, Japanese NHK broadcaster reported

Namie was evacuated following the 2011 tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster in Fukushima.

The prefecture has deployed several helicopters to extinguish the fires, which are believed to have been caused by lightning. According to police, at least 10 hectares of forest have burned in the area.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage to buildings so far, Japanese media say.

With strong winds stoking the flames, the Fukushima Prefecture has requested help from the Self-Defense Forces, Japan’s de-facto army, on Sunday.

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then you hear a story about people overcoming all odds to help others and it completely changes your perspective of the world. The story of Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi is certainly one of these.

Haixia and Wenqi are two 53-year-old men from China who have faced incredible challenges in their lives. Haixia was born with congenital cataracts that caused him to be blind in one eye. He then lost sight in his one good eye after a work accident in 2000. Wenqi tragically lost both of his arms in an accident when he was only three years old and has been living as a double amputee ever since.

Despite their physical setbacks, Haixia and Wenqi have remained utterly determined to live life to the fullest. These two best friends help one another navigate the world and when they’re together there is nothing that they cannot do.

Adding to their amazing story of friendship is the fact that the pair have managed to plant over 10,000 trees over the course of the past 10 years.

“I am his hands,” said Haixia. “He is my eyes. We are good partners.”

Amazing Earth-sized planet dubbed the ‘iceball’ discovered by NASA

59021059c461883a158b45c6.jpgNASA has discovered a planet the same size as Earth, and the same distance from its star as our planet is from the sun.

Due to its small size, the host star does not produce enough heat to support life on the planet. This has prompted scientists to label the world – nominally called OGLE-2016-BLG-1195Lb – the ‘iceball’ planet.

An international team of researchers found the planet using a technique known as ‘microlensing,’ which uses background stars as flashlights that mark out planets as dark dots when they cross the field of light.

“This iceball planet is the lowest-mass planet ever found through microlensing,” said Yossi Shvartzvald, a NASA postdoctoral fellow based at the space agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The study, published in Astrophysical Journal Letters, aims to increase our understanding of the different types of planetary systems, in particular the distribution and frequency of planets outside the central bulge of the Milky Way.

Some 13,000 light years away, the ‘iceball’ orbits an object so small that researchers believe it could be a brown dwarf, a star-like object not capable of generating energy through nuclear fusion.

Another theory suggests it’s an ultra-cool dwarf star like TRAPPIST-1, the recently discovered star found to be hosting seven Earth-like objects.
