At the beginning of his new wildlife documentary series Life Story, David Attenborough stands on a primeval plain, blue remembered hills pointy in the background, somewhere in Africa.

‘There’s a story that unites each of us with every animal on the planet,’ Attenborough opens, as violins swell in the background. ‘It’s a story of the greatest of all adventures – the journey through life.’

The acclaimed series shows footage of meerkats fighting with their food, humpback whales migrating, a young albatross learning to fly and – jump on to iPlayer NOW – harrowing scenes of five flightless, two-day-old goslings hurling themselves off towering cliffs after their mother, smacking and pinballing into rocks (three miraculously survive) as they plummet in search of grass to eat below.
