One of Egypt’s richest men is to face trial for blasphemy after tweeting cartoons of Mickey and Minnie Mouse wearing conservative Muslim attire.
Telecoms mogul and Coptic Christian Naguib Sawiris re-posted the images on Twitter last June. He subsequently apologised, saying he meant no offence.
But a formal complaint against him has now been referred to court.
Tensions between Egypt’s Muslims and minority Christian community have worsened in recent months.
“It’s a decision showing that there is justice in Egypt,” Mamduh Ismail, one of a group of lawyers who filed a legal complaint against Mr Sawiris, told Reuters.
The tweeted images showed Mickey Mouse wearing a traditional Islamic robe with a full beard, while Minnie Mouse is wearing a niqab – a full-face veil – with just her eyes showing.
She was identifiable by her large ears and trademark pink hair ribbon.
After an angry reaction from people who said they were offended, he later tweeted: “I apologise for those who don’t take this as a joke, I just thought it was a funny picture; no disrespect meant. I am sorry.”

Personally I think Muslims have blown this out of all proportion and by becoming hysterical about a cartoon that the most preposterous and inconsequential suggestion. What it does actually go to the entire world is that what the cartoon represents is that Muslims actually are thinking the way this cartoon is prepresenting. It is time we stopped actually humouring these people and give them a piece of our mind!
What I find blasphemous about Islam is that people call making any cartoon about Muhammad blasphemous, a man, who is not even qualified to be called a “prophet”. You may as well call a weather man a prophet if this is the level of prophecy required. You have to actually predict something and for it to be exact ,with every new prophecy, to be considered any tyoe of prophet.
He couldn’t even get historical facts right let alone what would come to pass in the future. Now that is funny!
I suggest eveyone to buy a Quran to see for yourself or better yet, read it from a free site on the internet. It really is that bad; or is that, it’s that bad that it’s good!
